As we all know, chocolate advent calendars are a beloved festive tradition that makes each day a little sweeter countdown to Christmas. These festive treats have become a staple in homes worldwide, but their origins go back over a century. So, how did chocolate advent calendars come to be?

Ready for a little choco history?

The concept of the advent calendar dates back to the early 19th century in Germany. Traditionally, families would mark the days leading up to Christmas with chalk drawings or lighting a candle for each day. In the early 1900s, German publisher Gerhard Lang is credited with creating the first printed advent calendar. Inspired by his childhood, when his mother gave him small treats behind doors, Lang’s design featured small pictures or Bible verses hidden behind the calendar doors.

The addition of chocolate to advent calendars didn’t occur until the 1950s, when chocolate manufacturers began to place a piece of chocolate behind each door. This innovation made advent calendars even more exciting, adding a sweet treat to each day of the Christmas countdown. By the 1980s, chocolate advent calendars had become a worldwide phenomenon, popular with both children and adults.
