At Ombar, we believe in being as transparent as possible in everything we do. Nowhere is this more important that in the subject of allergens.
Current UK labelling rules state that allergens in products must be highlighted in the ingredients list with a statement to explain that below them. In all Ombar products we do this by highlighting the allergens in bold.
But who says what’s an allergen? Whilst people can have differing reactions to any food, there are 14 common allergens that have been identified:
Peanut, milk, egg, some tree nuts (hazelnut, cashew, walnut), soy, wheat, mustard, lupin, sesame, shrimp/prawn, celery and fish.
It is only these 14 allergens that get highlighted in ingredients lists, so if you’re allergic to, say, strawberries, it will not be highlighted as an allergen.
In our factory, Ombar chocolate is made using good manufacturing principles. Between batches, machines are thoroughly flushed to ensure any cross-contamination is reduced as far as possible. It is possible, however, that a product may contain traces of ingredients from other products we produce as all our products are made on the same production line (we’re only small).
For that reason, we always say on our packs that it may also contain (other) nuts. This kind of statement is called ‘precautionary allergen labelling’ (PAL) and we believe this statement is vital for those with allergies to the common allergens so make clear choices.
But there’s more...
The labelling rules say that a PAL statement can only be used for referring to the 14 common allergens. It’s not permitted, for example, to say ‘May also contain strawberry’ as strawberry is not a common allergen.
So with full transparency in mind, we feel that the best thing to do is provide a list of every ingredient we use in our factory so that you can make an informed decision about your food choices, at least when it comes to your favourite chocolate, anyway.
All ingredients we use in our factory:
Common allergens highlighted in bold
- Cocoa / cacao
- Coconut sugar
- Probiotic: lactobacillus acidophilus
- Cane sugar
- Natural vanilla flavouring
- Sunflower oil
- All Spice
- Desert salt
